Roof Shingle Estimator

Shingle bundles, squares, underlayment, starter, ridge cap, and drip edge from your roof footprint and pitch — with waste built in.

Roofing is sold by the square — 100 square feet — but you measure the footprint, so the pitch multiplier is the step everyone forgets. Enter your roof's plan area and pitch and this calculator returns the sloped area, the squares, the field bundles with waste, and the underlayment, starter, ridge cap, and drip edge.

Confirm the footprint with the Square Footage Calculator, turn squares into a price with the Cost per Square Foot Calculator, and fold it into your Renovation Budget. Roofing is a frequent source of surprise costs — the hidden renovation costs guide covers what to expect.

Frequently asked

FAQ

How many bundles of shingles do I need?
Multiply your roof footprint by the pitch multiplier to get the sloped area, divide by 100 for squares, multiply by 3 bundles per square, and add ~10% waste. The calculator does this and rounds up to whole bundles.
What is a roofing square?
One square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Standard 3-tab and most architectural shingles come 3 bundles to a square, so each bundle covers about 33 square feet.
Should I enter footprint or sloped area?
Enter the footprint — the plan area as seen straight down. The pitch multiplier (for example ×1.118 for a 6:12 roof) converts it to the true sloped surface. Entering a sloped measurement double-counts the pitch and over-orders.
