Tile Calculator

How many tiles for a floor, wall, or backsplash — with the waste factor that matches your layout, the boxes to buy, and a cost estimate.

Tile is priced and wasted differently from sheet or plank flooring, which is why it needs its own calculator. Enter the area, the size of a single tile, and your layout pattern; the tool returns the tiles to buy (waste included), the box count, and a cost range for material and labor.

For floors specifically, cross-check with the Flooring Estimator, and fold the total into your Renovation Budget. The full cost breakdown is in the flooring installation cost guide.

Frequently asked

FAQ

How much extra tile should I order?
10% over the area for a straight layout, ~15% for diagonal, ~20% for herringbone — the more cuts a pattern needs at the edges, the more waste. This calculator builds the right waste factor in based on the pattern you choose.
How is a tile calculator different from a flooring estimator?
Flooring is sold by the box covering a known square footage and only goes on floors. Tile is sized per piece in inches, can go on walls and backsplashes too, and its waste swings with the layout pattern — so the math is different.
Why buy from the same dye lot?
Tile color varies slightly between production batches (dye lots). Order all your tile — including the waste overage — at once from one lot, and keep the spares. A matching replacement years later is nearly impossible.
