Paver Patio Calculator
Pavers, base gravel and bedding sand in cubic yards, joint-sand bags, and edge restraint — from your patio size and paver dimensions.
A paver patio is really four materials at once — the pavers, the gravel base, the bedding sand, and the joint sand — plus edge restraint to keep it all from spreading. Enter the patio size and your paver dimensions and this calculator returns each quantity, with the base and sand in cubic yards ready to order.
For bulk material it pairs with the Mulch & Soil Calculator (same cubic-yard math for landscaping) and the Concrete Calculator if you're setting a footing or border. Confirm the area with the Square Footage Calculator, and plan the layout in the outdoor patio planning guide.
FAQ
- How many pavers do I need?
- Divide the patio area by one paver's area, then add 5–10% for cuts and breakage — 5% for a simple running bond, 10% for herringbone or diagonal layouts. The calculator rounds up to whole pavers.
- How deep should the base be?
- Use 4 inches of compacted gravel for a light pedestrian patio on dry soil, 6 inches for typical and freeze-thaw soils (the default), and 8–12 inches for anything bearing vehicle weight. Over a 1-inch bedding-sand layer.
- Why buy extra gravel?
- The cubic-yard figures are for the finished, compacted depth. Crushed gravel compacts roughly 15–20% during installation, so order about 20% more than the calculated volume so you don't come up short.
