The current climate, source of inspiration for Serge Lutens’ Baptism by Fire

Unfortunately today, fear and violence are everyday elements that are increasingly invading the news. However, far from refuting these feelings, the daring Serge Lutens chose to be inspired by them to create a perfume. This is how its brand new unisex fragrance called Baptism of Fire was developed . As usual, this is a fragrance unlike any other, with a perfect architecture and an extraordinary creative sense. It will therefore appear in the Serge Lutens boutique at the Palais-Royal in Paris from July 1, 2016.

The enigmas of Serge Lutens

Serge Lutens is an atypical character who constantly draws us into a world that only he fully understands. Also, it accompanies each of its niche fragrances with a mysterious quote. On the occasion of the release of Baptism by Fire, he wrote: “My emotion is fluid. Like a wax that flows into a mold, it strengthens what appeals to me, like here, this gingerbread heart. In reality, Baptism of Fire is a contradictory juice which speaks to us of fair and gingerbread but also of a game of massacre, the smell of gunfire and dust. Serge Lutens wishes through it to express “the renewed taste of a fear of gingerbread.” It’s a bit as if this magical place full of happy people suddenly found itself plunged into darkness and overcome by fear. Baptême du Feu is a very contrasting and yet perfectly structured fragrance. This is a juice mainly intended for insiders and giving us a picture of the terror of the modern world … A very atypical and unconventional image in the world of perfumery. After all, there could only be Serge Lutens to craft a perfume like this.

The unexpected scent of Baptism by Fire

In order to create his niche fragrance, Serge Lutens joined forces with perfumer Christopher Sheldrake. This collaboration is far from being a first between the two men. Indeed, the two began to work together in the 1980s with the creation of the fragrance Féminité du Bois. Since that day, it’s a creative story that lasts and never ceases to surprise us. Baptême du Feu contains an invigorating, sparkling and tangy flavor of mandarin. Then, the gingerbread makes its appearance and is placed at the heart of this composition. This gourmet and sassy ingredient is further enhanced with a more aphrodisiac hint of ginger. Powdery notes, meanwhile, bring more elegance and refinement to Baptism of Fire. Osmanthus and woody notes reinforce the autumnal aspect of this juice before it ends with more sensual scents. The latter come directly from castoreum, a substance of animal origin with accords very reminiscent of leather. Everything is then contained in a bottle with the typical shape of Serge Lutens perfumes. Baptism of Fire proudly displays an intense blood red color sliced with a very refined black label. On the display side, he then proudly exhibits himself in front of a shooting target that says a lot about his universe.
